Stabila - A Brief Background

Stabila is one of the most historic and respected tool manufacturers in Germany, if not the world. Its history traces back to 1820, when it was established as a family business in Maikammer by Gustav Ullrich. The first leap forward for the company happened in 1851, when Anton Ullrich invented the carpenter's wooden folding rule and patented the unique hinge assembly. This was a revolutionary alternative to measuring sticks, and proof of its ingenuity is that its descendent is still available as the Stabila 1807 folding rule.

By the end of the 19th century, the range of innovative measuring and layout tools had grown to include cast-iron spirit levels, wooden carpenter's levels, hose-style water levels and plumb lines. The wood used for the carpenter's levels had to be of such high standard that Stabila would purchase complete decks from ships to obtain the correct quality teak. This emphasis on quality saw the company grow to employ more than 1200 people in Germany and France by the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.

Throughout the 20th century more innovations were to follow. In 1930, Stabila patented a design that was the predecessor of the pocket tape measure still in use today. Inevitably a toll was taken during World War 2, as the factory was bombed and vacated, halting production until the end of the conflict. When work resumed, invention flourished again: Stabila patented acrylic glass spirit level vials, and the system for mounting them directly into the level without screws. Stabila was also the first company in the world to produce light alloy spirit levels, rendering heavy wooden and iron levels all but obselete.

As the 1990's took Stabila into the 21st century, the product portfolio took another leap forward with the introduction of laser technology into the levels. This enabled production of market-leading interior and exterior laser levels. In the 2006, laser distance measures entered the range.

At present the Stabila range includes hundreds of levels and measuring tools - a range unsurpassed in quality or choice for the joiner, carpenter, bricklayer, mason or fitter.

Current Stabila Products

Today there are many ranges of spirit levels available in the Stabila catalogue. These start with the lightweight Stabila 70-2 series levels, ideal for joinery or DIY use. The Stabila 96-2 series levels add reinforcing ribs along the length of the levels, and rubber end caps to protect from drops, making it suitable for use in tough conditions - ideal for builders on site, especially in the Stabila 96-2-K variant with its trowel-proof protective strip. There is a further option of the Stabila 196-2-K brickies level, which combines the protective strip with moulded hand grips fitted directly into the level.

The Stabila 82S series is a solid alloy level that is still light, but has greater strength than the 70 and 96. The Stabila 83S series levels offer the ultimate in toughness, cast as a solid alloy girder that will withstand more impact than any conventional spirit level. The 83S also has the benefit of the double-plumb system which allows the vials to be viewed from all angles. At the top of the range, Stabila 106T telescopic levels give massive length, making them ideal for use in properties with high ceilings.

There is also a full range of smaller and specialist levels, ranging from line levels for attaching to brick lines and profiles, to magnetic torpedo levels that are ideal for use with scaffolding or structural steelwork.

The range of laser technology products in the Stabila range is already impressive. The LD300, LD400 and LD500 are second-generation laser range finders that provide a high level of accuracy required by surveyors and professional builders. They are suitable for calculating area and volume as well as simple distance measurements. These are most suited to internal use but serve as a very quick and highly accurate replacement for the traditional surveyor's tape.

Then there are laser levels for interior and exterior use, starting with simple but precise line lasers such as the Stabila Baby Laser and working up to automatic self-levelling lasers. The range of self-levelling lasers is diverse, including models such as the Stabila LA-PL2, which is an automatic laser plumb line for establishing true vertical lines; the Stabila LAX200, which combines automatic levelling with a cross-line laser beam for horizontal and vertical use; the Stabila LAPR-100 is an automatic rotation laser which projects a continuous rotating laser line around a perfectly level radius; and Stabila LAR200 is the highest level equivalent to the LAPR-100 rotation laser, but with a huge 550 metre range making it suitable for outdoors use on large worksites.

Beyond spirit and laser levels, there is now a full range of Stabila tools which include an ultrasonic distance estimator, robust BMT tape measures, carpenter's pencils and the 1607 folding ruler.
